Research

This section is designed to inform you about research into effective chemistry and science teaching.

Science Education Research can really help you to become an effective teacher

It can be difficult to understand the language of Chemistry and Science Education Research, particularly when you are just starting off. It can also be difficult to find the time at this point in your teaching career when you are trying to study for 5 different modules! So the plan here is to give you the ‘nuts and bolts’ of a research idea and a practical example or practical advice about incorporating them into your teaching. (Perhaps at some point you might take the time to look at Useful Science Education References and give us feedback about what paper you read, the basic idea discussed in the paper, etc.)

At the moment we have three research ideas ready for you to have a look at: Concept Cartoons, Multiple Levels of Representation and The use of Models in Chemistry. I have other research ideas that I am preparing to add but if you have heard of or read about an idea that you think is very relevant please let me know and I can add that to the to-do list (This to-do list is starting to get pretty long).

Boy chemistry is confusing! I wonder why?

What are concept cartoons? Why should I use them? How should I make them?
